We’re Just Getting Started
Columbia’s next chapter starts with the same big ideas that shaped its beginning: inclusion, connection, care for the land and a strong sense of belonging. As we celebrate 60 years, we’re looking ahead to how those values can guide life here for generations to come.
A Community Built on a Bold Idea
Columbia began with a bold idea: a community planned around people first. In the 1960s, James Rouse envisioned a place in Howard County that welcomed many backgrounds, respected the land and brought homes, schools, shops, recreation and open space together. In 1967, Columbia introduced a new model for community, which continues to shape our story 60 years later.
